Understanding God in Jewish tradition
In the Torah, God is called Yahweh (Jehovah in English), the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Shema, the central prayer of Judaism, declares: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One." God is understood as eternal, the source of all creation, and the guide of Jewish history and morality.
A central theme in the Torah is God's covenant (berith) with the Jewish people:
"In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
"I am that I am." (Exodus 3:14 - God's response to Moses)
"Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord is One." (Deuteronomy 6:4 - The Shema)
Jews connect with God through: The Shema prayer, Torah study, Mitzvot (commandments), keeping Kosher, observing the Sabbath, and celebrating Jewish holidays.
